Disc vs Rotor LLDPE Pulverizer Machine: Which One to Choose?

LLDPE doesn't have one single answer for disc versus rotor the way PVC does. It really comes down to what you're making with the powder afterward when choosing an LLDPE Pulverizer Machine, rotomoulded tanks need something very different from what a compounding line needs, and that's the whole crux of this decision.

Where Disc Grinding Wins on an LLDPE Pulverizer Machine

A disc pulverizer shears material between two hardened, closely-set discs, and for rotomoulding specifically, that's usually the right call. Rotomoulding needs powder fine enough and consistent enough to coat the inside of a mould evenly as it rotates, coarse or uneven particles show up later as thin spots or surface defects in the finished tank or container.

Disc machines give you that control. The gap adjusts on the fly, so if your powder is running a bit coarse for a particular mould geometry, you tighten it and keep going. It's not the fastest grinding method in terms of raw kg/hr, but for rotomoulding-grade LLDPE, consistency matters more than speed.

Where Rotor Hammer Grinding Makes More Sense

Rotor hammer machines hit material with fast-spinning blades rather than shearing it, and that trades some particle consistency for throughput. If you're producing masterbatch, doing general compounding, or grinding LLDPE for an application that doesn't need rotomoulding-grade fineness, a rotor setup can move a lot more material per hour.

The particle size ends up more variable, some fine, some coarser, because the screen mesh is doing the sorting work instead of a mechanical gap. For a lot of non-rotomoulding applications, that variability just doesn't matter much.

So Which One Actually Fits Your Line?

Honestly, ask yourself what the powder is for before anything else. Rotomoulding, disc, no real debate there. General compounding, colour masterbatch, or coarser downstream processes, rotor hammer often makes more economic sense given the throughput advantage.

There's a middle case too: plants running mixed product lines, some rotomoulding, some not. In that situation it sometimes makes sense to run two machines rather than compromise on one, though that obviously depends on your volumes and budget.

Heat and LLDPE, A Smaller Concern Than With PVC

LLDPE has a lower softening point than some other plastics but isn't nearly as heat-sensitive as PVC or CPVC in terms of degradation risk. That said, running a disc machine still keeps things cooler overall, which helps with powder flow characteristics even if degradation isn't the primary worry the way it would be with a PVC line.

Q: Is disc or rotor better for LLDPE rotomoulding powder?

Disc type, almost always. Rotomoulding needs fine, consistent particle size to coat mould surfaces evenly, and disc shearing with an adjustable gap delivers that more reliably than impact grinding does.

Q: What about LLDPE for masterbatch or general compounding?

Rotor hammer machines usually make more sense here. You get higher throughput, and the wider particle size range that comes with impact grinding typically isn't a problem for these applications.

Q: Does grinding heat matter much for LLDPE?

Less than it does for PVC or CPVC. LLDPE isn't as prone to thermal degradation, though a disc machine still runs cooler overall, which can help with powder flow.

Q: Can I run both rotomoulding and compounding LLDPE through the same machine?

You can, but you'll be compromising on one side or the other. Plants with significant volume in both areas sometimes run separate machines instead.
